Abstract

Parenting is the process by which parents introduce and support children, facilitating their development in understanding themselves and the world around them, achieved through fostering a healthy emotional bond and environment. Each parent had their own style, which could influence children in different manners. The implemented style could have diverse reasons underlying the chosen approach, in this case, it is intergenerational trauma. It was a condition where the parent had trauma that could influence the way she nurtures the child. This research intends to (1) understand the type of parenting style that is carried out through Ming Lee's character in the ‘Turning Red’ movie and (2) how it influences Melin Lee, as the daughter, behaviour. Answering the problem was achieved by identifying the implementation of parenting style and interpreting the influence on Meilin’s behaviour. The qualitative method was used to analyse the data gathered through the scenes and dialogues in the movie. The collected data was analysed by classifying and referring to the theory of Diana Baumrind. From the research, it was found that Ming Lee implemented an authoritarian and authoritative parenting style towards her daughter. It influenced Meilin Lee's behaviour in the environment, namely insecure, lying, rebellious, respectful, high achiever, self-assured, responsible, and desired for approval.
