Abstract

Background: The birth process by Sectio Caesarea (SC) is a general surgical procedure for childbirth recommended by WHO; however, this creates challenges for postpartum mothers, especially in initiating and maintaining successful breastfeeding due to pain and delayed lactation. Breast care is one intervention that is believed to increase breast milk production by stimulating the necessary hormones. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing breast care for postpartum mothers with Sectio Caesarea (SC) on the success of breast milk production in the maternity room. Research Method: This research is a mixed method, combining quantitative quasi-experiment design with pre-and post-test design and qualitative phenomenology. This research involved 17 postpartum mothers with Sectio Caesarea (SC) selected through Purposive Accidental Sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observations which were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Analysis and Discussion: Based on the results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Statistical Test analysis, a significance value (sig) or p-value of 0.000 <  (0.05) was obtained, which shows that there is a significant difference in the smoothness of breast milk production after breast care. Qualitative data shows positive subjective responses from mothers who express feeling comfortable, and calm, reduced aches and pains, and increased confidence in breastfeeding after receiving breast care. Results: The application of breast care techniques to postpartum mothers has proven to be effective in increasing breast milk production. This not only facilitates optimal breast milk production for the baby but also provides additional benefits such as increasing the quantity and quality of breast milk, preventing blockage of the milk ducts, and reducing anxiety and discomfort for the mother. Recommendations: Breast care should be carried out routinely at least twice a day for postpartum mothers, especially those who have undergone CS. Health workers should provide education and encouragement to mothers about the importance of breast care techniques to increase breastfeeding success and maternal comfort.
