Abstract
Physical perfection, which is believed to be a myth about the standard form of beauty of women's bodies and faces, is a topic that has always been talked about to this day. Mass media is not just a medium used as a forum for delivering messages and information, but has an important role in shaping public understanding. Film is a form of mass media that is in demand today, film is not only used as entertainment but has a function as a criticism of issues that exist in society today. The purpose of this study is to find out how the understanding of University of Muhammadiyah Malang students in interpreting the message of beauty standards shown in the 200 Pounds Beauty Film (remake). This study uses the theory of reception analysis of Encoding and decoding proposed by Stuart Hall, where the audience is grouped into 3 positions, namely Dominant, Negotiation, and Opposition. The results of the research found show that each individual has their own understanding of the message conveyed in the film, this is due to differences in social and cultural backgrounds. There are 4 Dominant positions which means they fully agree with the message presented by the film, and 1 negotiation position which means they agree with some of the messages conveyed in the film.
