Abstract

Background: Burnout syndrome is a condition of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low self-efficacy that often occurs in nursing students due to academic demands. One of the impacts is decreased sleep quality, which ultimately triggers excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). EDS can reduce academic productivity, affect mental health, and increase the risk of accidents. This study aims to analyze the relationship between academic burnout, sleep quality, and EDS in nursing students.
Objective: To determine the relationship between academic burnout, sleep quality, and excessive daytime sleepiness in nursing students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang
Research Method: The study was conducted on 115 respondents from the Classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 who were selected using the Random Sampling Technique using G Power. The instruments used included the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) to measure academic burnout, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to measure sleep quality, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to measure excessive daytime sleepiness. Data analysis used frequency distribution for univariate data testing, while for bivariate data testing using Spearman Correlation Test to test the relationship between variables.
Results: The results of the Spearman'rho Test obtained a significance value of p = 0.039 ≤ 0.05 for the relationship between academic burnout and excessive daytime sleepiness and p = 0.016 ≤ 0.05 for the relationship between sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness.
Conclusion: Academic burnout and sleep quality have a significant relationship with EDS. Students with high levels of burnout and poor sleep quality are more susceptible to excessive daytime sleepiness.
