Abstract
Background: Acute pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharyngeal lining characterized by sore throat and erythema that is less than 15 days old. Acute pharyngitis is a common occurrence that occurs in 2-5% of pediatric outpatient visits. In 2018, the prevalence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) including acute pharyngitis in Indonesia was 9.3%. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018 designated Indonesia with the seventh largest number of smokers in the world and the second position in Southeast Asia. A person who is frequently exposed to cigarette smoke will increase the risk of developing pharyngitis, especially in toddlers who are often the first infection as well as an immune system that is not yet optimal and the lumen of the airway is still narrow.
Objective: This aim of this research is to determine the effect of tobacco smoke exposure in the home environment on the incidence of acute pharyngitis in toddlers at the UMM Hospital pediatric clinic.
Methods: This research uses observational analytics with a cross sectional approach by collecting questionnaire data and then analysed through SPSS software version 26 using the Chi-square statistical test.
Results: There was an effect of tobacco smoke exposure in the home environment on the incidence of acute pharyngitis in toddlers at the UMM Hospital pediatric clinic with a p-value = 0,036 (p<0,05).
Conclusion: There was an influence of tobacco smoke exposure in the home environment on the incidence of acute pharyngitis in toddlers at the UMM Hospital pediatric clinic.
