Abstract

Background: Menstrual cycle is a period that is generally calculated from the first day of menstruation until the next menstruation and usually lasts 28 days. Disorders of the menstrual cycle caused by high and low body fat can affect hormonal balance and the percentage of fat in the body which can be measured using body mass index.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index and menstrual cycle in undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah University in Malang.
Method: this research is quantitative research. The research design was an analytical survey with a cross sectional approach among undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah University in Malang using a simple random sampling technique with a total of 107 respondents. This research instrument used a questionnaire. The data analysis used was the Spearman Rank test.
Results: the results of the statistical test showed that the majority of respondents with normal BMI and experienced regular menstrual cycles were 43 respondents (40.2%). Based on the results of the analysis obtained from the Spearman test to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and Menstrual Cycle showed a p value = 0.317 where the p value> 0.05 which indicates no relationship between body mass index and menstrual cycle. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is no relationship between body mass index and menstrual cycle in undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang.
