Abstract

Based on the interview result with biology teacher class X-5 Laboratory Senior High School of State University of Malang . The obstacle that was faced by students in learning activity in general was the concept of mastery problem. Biology learning process at Laboratory Junior High School was actually good enough but in course of problem solving in discussion activity, students were still confused with problem solving stage, espeacially in statement of problem and hyphothesis that caused students lack in critical thinking ability. If the teacher made the rank list of the problematic class, class X-5 was in second rank of entire class X that has problem. To overcome problem, it was needed a method that could increase students’ thinking ability to solve problem in discussion activity. The method that was applied in this research was Problem Based Learning (PBL). This research was aimed to know the result of learning and students’critical thinking ability in class X-5 Laboratory Senior High School, especially in biology subject using Problem Based Learning method (PBL). This research was classroom action research which was consisted of two cycles. This research was in class X-5 laboratory Senior High School of State University of Malang in periode 2009/2010. This study was done since 12th May until 3rd June 2010. The research subject was 36 students. The research methodology was students’ learning product ( group report) and learning test result which was taken in the end of each cycle. The result of this study showed that in cycle 1, the students that were completely success was 23 students with classical completely success was 63.9% with the average value was 71.69%. In cycle two, the students that were success completely increased became 28 students, with classical succesfulness was 77.8% and the students average score was 78.75. Students’ critical thinking ability also increased from 37.15 (critical enough) became 60.7% ( critic ). Based on the research result, it could be concluded that Problem Based Lerning method (PBL) could increase students’ critical thinking and biology learning result in class X-5 Laboratory Senior High School of State University of Malang.
