Abstract

Reading comprehension skills are an issue of great concern in the world of education. Learning about reading comprehension certainly starts from grade 4 with competency standards for reading initiative and retelling stories. Reading skills to understand the content of short stories is one form of appreciation of literary works. This research aims to describe the short story reading comprehension skills of grade 4 students at SDN 2 Landungsari, describe the obstacles faced by students in their reading skills to understand the content of short stories and describe solutions to the obstacles faced by students in their reading skills to understand the content of short stories.
This research uses a descriptive qualitative method, where the researcher uses observation, interviews, documentation, field notes and story test to obtain data. The data that has been collected is processed according to the indicators written in the form of a test. From the results of the test carried out regarding the reading skills to understand the content of short stories for class 4 students at SDN 2 Landungsari, the overall score was 79. If put into the reading skills category, understanding the content of the story, these students are included in the Good category. The problems experienced by students are being slow in understanding the content and meaning of reading and there are students who have difficulty writing words or letters.
The recommended solution to overcome these obstacles is: Building communication between parents of students to jointly guide, develop and control student growth and development in terms of affective, cognitive and psychomotor skills. Provide assistance and guidance to students who have deficiencies in reading and writing abilities or skills. Using media and learning methods that can attract students' enthusiasm, such as using pictorial or audio-visual stories. So it can be concluded that the reading skills to understand the content of short stories in grade 4 students at SDN 2 Landungsari have good reading skills to understand the content. Therefore, it is recommended that students read more, not only short stories but also other readings to develop students' reading skills in understanding the content of short stories.
