Abstract

In the current digital era, Smartphones are one of the media that make it easier for humans to do activities and communicate, and currently students use the internet not only to find academic and non-academic information, but also to see the activities of others who are considered more valuable than themselves through social media. Fear Of Missing Out Is Anxiety Felt When Someone Else Has a Better Experience Than Him and There Is an Urge to Do the Same. Gen Z is a generation that grows up in the digital era that is greatly influenced by technology and Social Media, one of which is Himakom students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang who are quite active in the use of social media. This study examines how the Fear Of Missing Out (Fomo) Phenomenon in the Use of Social Media among Gen Z Himakom Students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.The purpose of this study is to analyze how the phenomenon of fear is To analyze how the phenomenon of fomo occurs among Gen Z in Himakom students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang and to find out the impact of the phenomenon of fomo that occurs in Himakom students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study uses a qualitative research approach with a descriptive research type. In addition, this study also uses data collection techniques with interviews and documentation. Interviews were conducted with five Himakom Members of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang with the results of the study concluding that Himakom Students Experienced Fear of missing out experienced a high FOMO level related to the use of social media, especially Instagram as the main platform to build personal branding. They feel pressure to achieve high social standards in both academic and non-academic fields, as well as to maintain their self-image in front of others in their industry or career. This phenomenon not only increases anxiety and dissatisfaction in life, but also has the potential to lead to dependence on social media
