Abstract
In this era of globalization, intercultural interaction has become increasingly unavoidable, particularly in academic environments where students from various regions and cultures come together. This study aims to understand the processes and methods of adapting speech codes in intercultural communication among students from Balikpapan studying in Malang, specifically the 2022 cohort who have completed their first year and are continuing their studies. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation. Through a qualitative approach, this study involves in-depth interviews with 5 students from Balikpapan currently studying at various universities in Malang.
The research findings indicate that the 2022 Balikpapan students in Malang experience all four stages: honeymoon phase, frustration phase, recovery phase, and readjustment phase. The conclusion of this study is that the adaptation process in intercultural communication for the 2022 Balikpapan students begins with a sense of enjoyment when moving to Malang, followed by experiencing communication-related conflicts that cause stress or frustration. However, they successfully find solutions to these conflicts and end with adapting several speech codes in terms of dialect, intonation, tempo, and facial expressions. The study also finds that Balikpapan students are more compatible with using a cultural hybridity method when adapting to their new environment.
