Abstract
At the end of 2021 and 2022, the highest mountain on Java Island, Mount Semeru, erupted, impacting Lumajang and Malang regencies. During disasters, the media often focuses solely on victims, damage, and incoming aid. However, post-disaster recovery requires a long process until the community can fully recover. The author aims to study the environmental and social conditions, as well as the role of MDMC after the eruption of Mount Semeru, through a journalistic visual photography work in the form of a photobook. The author photographed and volunteered at one of the organizations involved in disaster activities throughout Indonesia, the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC). The photography process was conducted using the EDFAT method, observation, and interviews. The author joined as a volunteer and stayed at the MDMC post to facilitate observation and approach to the subjects. The results show that MDMC supports the recovery of social environment needs through seven clusters: logistics distribution, public kitchens, health services, education services, psychosocial services, community development, and the construction of supplementary housing. Despite Mount Semeru's alert status, the community continues to live in the vicinity, as they are accustomed to living alongside the threat of disasters while also benefiting from the mountain's resources.
