Abstract
Background : Hypercholesterolemia does not only occur in adults but is now common in teenagers. Hypercholesterolemia causes high blood pressure. The causes of hypercholesterolemia are the habit of consuming foods high in fat, lack of physical activity, smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, poor sleep patterns. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of hypertension in adolescents.
Research methods : The design of this research uses descriptive correlation with a cross sectional approach. The sampling technique used was Simple random sampling with a total sample of 54 young Nursing Students Class of 2021, Muhammadiyah
University of Malang. Collecting data by checking cholesterol using easy touch, checking blood pressure and filling out the Hypertension Symptoms Questionnaire. Data analysis in this study used a non-parametric statistical test, namely the Spearman
Correlation Test.
Results : The research results obtained with a sample size of 54 people using the Spearman correlation test showed that there was a relationship between blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of hypertension in adolescents as evidenced by a significant value of 0.000 (sig<0.05) and a coefficient of r= 0.909 with a relationship
value of very strong.
Conclusion :Blood cholesterol levels that exceed normal limits can trigger the occurrence of hypertension. Based on the results of significant research regarding the relationship between blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of hypertension in
adolescents at Muhammadiyah University of Malang, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship and has a very strong relationship.
