Abstract
Background: In the elderly, depression becomes a common mental health problem, due to the natural processes of aging and mood changes in older people themselves. Depression for the elderly can affect the quality of his sleep so that the problem makes his sleep feel uncomfortable and also unpleasant. The aim of this study was to find out the relationship between the rate of depression and the quality of sleep in the elderly.
Methods: The design of the research used descriptive correlation using cross sectional approaches. The sampling technique used is Total Sampling with a total of 53 elderly in the KNDJH & Lansia Al-Ishlah Cottage. Data collection using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) & Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires and data analysis using the Spearman Correlation Test.
Results: The results of this study show that the majority of the rates of depression in KNDJH & Pondok Lansia Al-Ishlah are 17 (32.1%) normal, 14 (26.4%) have mild, 11 (20.8%) have moderate depression and 11 (20.1%) have severe depression. Spearman's correlation test results showed a positive relationship between the depression rate and proofed sleep quality with a significant value of 0,000 (sig<0,05) and a correlate value of 0,479. The strength of the relationship on this study is moderate.
Conclusion: Poor levels of depression can affect sleep quality, as evidenced by the relationship between depression levels and sleep quality in the elderly. Poor with positive correlation. That means the higher a person's depression rate, the worse the quality of his sleep.
