Abstract
Background: The excessive use of social media can trigger social comparison behavior. When social comparison is conducted negatively, the self-esteem of the students can become low. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the relationship between social comparison and self-esteem in nursing students who used social media.
Method: The research design was a cross-sectional correlation with a quantitative approach to examine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The population in this study consisted of nursing students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang, selected using purposive sampling techniques. The sample for this study included 247 individuals. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. The independent variable, social comparison, was measured using the UDACS questionnaire, while the dependent variable, Self-Esteem, was measured using the SSES questionnaire.
Results: The Chi-Square correlation test obtained a p-value of 0.009 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between social comparison and self-esteem. The crosstabs analysis results showed that as social comparison increased, self-esteem decreased..
Conclusion: There was a relationship between social comparison and self-esteem. The majority of students engaged in upward comparison, while the prevalent type of self-esteem experienced by most students was high self-esteem, influenced by various factors.
