Abstract

Self-openness on a social media account for an influencer to share information with her fans is a common thing, but there are various forms of online crime that will occur if there is too much self-openness on Instagram. Therefore, there needs to be information management done before sharing posts on Instagram. This research aims to find out how the privacy management of Malang hijab influencers on Instagram social media. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach and data collection techniques using observation, documents, and semi-structured interviews to Malang hijab influencers. The results showed that the seven research subjects managed information by setting private limits on the information they would share, by not sharing personal problems, such as family problems, and the closest people on their Instagram. However, there are differences in information boundaries between influencers with university and non-university educational backgrounds. In maintaining ownership of personal information, influencers utilize Instagram features, such as hide story, bad comment removal, and block to remove annoying followers and to maintain self-image. The criteria that influence the disclosure and withholding of personal information are motivational, cultural, risk-reward, and contextual criteria. In addition, the tension before sharing personal information on Instagram makes influencers consider repeatedly the posts to be shared. So that there is careful thought about the posts that will be shared on Instagram.
