Abstract
Three-phase motors, otherwise known as induction motors, are the most commonly used type of motor in industry, especially squirrel cage type induction motors. This is due to its various technical and economic advantages. Nonetheless, induction motors also have some drawbacks, such as difficulty in speed regulation and the need for high starting currents. Therefore, the soft starter method is used to reduce the starting current. This method uses six thyristors arranged in anti-parallel and a PID controller optimized using the PSO algorithm. Its function is to reduce the voltage on the induction motor and gradually increase the voltage until it reaches the full level so that the initial current surge can be suppressed and reduce the overshoot and steady state error on the induction motor. based on the experimental results of the soft starter method and the use of a PID controller optimized using the PSO algorithm, it can be seen that the initial current generated is lower by 21.92%. In addition, there is a decrease in the overshoot value and steady state error that does not exceed 1%, if compared to the Direct On Line (DOL) starting method that does not use a PID controller. through this research, the risk of damage to the induction motor can be reduced.
