Abstract
Background: Cirrhosis is widespread damage to the liver characterized by fibrosis
and structural conversion of normal liver architecture into abnormal nodules. The
end result is damage to hepatocytes, which are replaced by fibrous tissue. One of
the clinical manifestations of hepatic cirrhosis is portal hypertension. Portal
hypertension is defined as an increase in pressure in the portal vein and is diagnosed
if the Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient (HVPG) is >5 mmHg. Non-selective beta-
blockers (NSBB) such as propranolol are used as a treatment option for patients
with hepatic cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Propranolol which is a β1 and β2
adrenergic receptor antagonist, induces a decreased cardiac output and splanchnic
vasoconstriction.
Objective: To determine the profile of propranolol use in relation to dosage, route
of administration, and duration of administration in patients with liver cirrhosis.
Method: This study used a retrospective observational method with a quantitative
descriptive approach. Data were taken from the medical records of patients with
liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension who were hospitalized between January 2023
and December 2024. The sample size was 20 patients, and data were analyzed
univariately to determine frequency distribution, percentage, and mean.
Results & Conclusions: There were 20 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Propranolol was used single oral dose in all patients (100%). The most dose was
propranolol (3x10mg)po in 11 patients (55%). The most duration of propranolol
use was 3–7 days in 11 patients (55%).
