Abstract
Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common degenerative diseases, particularly affecting the elderly population, and is a leading cause of decreased quality of life. The quality of life of OA patients is influenced by various factors, including physiological aspects such as chronic pain and limited mobility, psychological factors such as depression and anxiety, and social aspects such as family support and economic status. Despite numerous studies, gaps remain in understanding which determinants have the most significant impact on the quality of life of OA patients.
Objectives of this final project are:1) To identify the various determinants affecting the quality of life in osteoarthritis patients from physiological, psychological, and social perspectives; 2) To understand the concept of quality of life in OA patients and how specific factors influence their well-being; 3) To provide insights into existing research gaps regarding the determinants of quality of life in OA patients; and 4) To analyze intervention strategies that can be applied to improve the quality of life of OA patients based on current research findings.
Method: This study employed a narrative literature review approach by analyzing scientific articles from databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Sinta, published within the last five years and relevant to the theme of OA patients’ quality of life.
Results and discussion reveal that the quality of life of OA patients is significantly influenced by a combination of multidimensional factors. Chronic pain and comorbidities reduce physical functioning; depression and anxiety worsen pain perception and motivation; and poor social support and low socioeconomic status hinder access to healthcare services. Intervention strategies such as pharmacological management, physiotherapy, patient education, and psychosocial approaches have been shown to effectively improve quality of life. Therefore, a holistic biopsychosocial approach is strongly recommended in the management of OA patients.
