Abstract
Background: Foot care is one of the treatments to minimize complications on the feet of people with diabetes mellitus. However, foot care activities in patients with diabetes mellitus are still low. Family support is a factor that influences foot care behavior and this support can meet the needs of patients physically and mentally.
Objectives: To identify the relationship between family support and foot care behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods: Using quantitative research design with a correlational approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, bivariate analysis was carried out using spearman correlation. The sample used in this study amounted to 157 respondents who had diabetes mellitus and met the inclusion criteria. This research was conducted on September 17 - October 30, 2024 at Mulyorejo Health Center.
Results: About 52.9% of respondents had low family support. And 68.8% of respondents showed poor foot care behavior. From the results of the Spearman correlation test, there is a relationship between family support and foot care behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Malang with a significance value of 0.000 < α (0.05).
Conclusions: If the family support obtained by patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is lower, the foot care behavior carried out by patients will be lower. Therefore, it is hoped that health workers, especially as nurses, can provide education to patients and families about the importance of foot care in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
