Abstract

Introduction: Self-esteem is an important way for humans to appreciate their physical, intellectual, emotional, and moral worth, and how others treat them as a result of interactions with their environment. Individuals who have low self-esteem will feel less confident in solving problems, therefore they are prone to self-harm. Self-harm is a type of act that is detrimental to oneself by involving an intentional element that causes damage to body tissue.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-esteem and the tendency of self-harm behavior in students of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the 2021 to 2023 intake.
Methods: This study design uses a cross-sectional approach, and uses the Spearman rank test which examines the relationship between self-esteem and the tendency of self-harm in students of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the 2021 to 2023 intake. Researchers used the Rosenberg scale (RSES) and SHI (Self-Harm Inventory). Instruments for self-esteem and self-harm. The study was conducted on October 20 - November 1, 2024. The sample in this study was 326 respondents who filled out a questionnaire issued via Google Form using the simple random sampling method.
Results: The results are a significant relationship between self-esteem and the tendency to self-harm in UMM FIKES students in the 2021-2023 class with a significance value of p = 0.000 (p <a = 0.05). The strength variable in this study shows weak strength. With a correlation coefficient value of (.426)
Conclusions: Weak correlation shows that self-esteem has a moderate effect on students' self-harm. The level of approach shows positive that if self-esteem is low, self-harm is low. This means that there is a mediating variable that connects and acts as an intermediary between the two variables
