Abstract
Background: Body image issues have become a global phenomenon that is increasingly
concerning, particularly among adolescent girls. In Indonesia, female adolescents aged
13–25 tend to experience negative body image at moderate to high levels. Dissatisfaction
with body image often leads to low self-esteem, which can negatively impact mental and
social health.
Method: This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach.
Data were collected from 307 respondents using the Multidimensional Body-Self
Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) to measure body image and the Rosenberg Self-esteem
Scale (RSES) to measure self-esteem. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman
correlation test.
Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents had a negative body image
(55%) and moderate self-esteem (45%). Analysis revealed a significant positive
correlation between body image and self-esteem (r=0.301; p<0.05).
Conclusion: A positive body image is associated with higher self-esteem among female
adolescents. Interventions such as education on body image and self-esteem, along with
support from family and the school environment, are necessary to enhance the mental
well-being of adolescents.
