Abstract
Background: the increasing use of social media among students can trigger depression, anxiety, and stress. Nursing students face high academic pressure, putting them at greater risk of experiencing mental health problems due to social media addiction. This addiction results in the inability to control access, triggering depression, anxiety, and stress. Using social media for social validation can lower self-esteem, while direct social interaction decreases.
Objective: to identify the relationship between social media addiction and the level of depression, anxiety, and stress among nursing students in Malang.
Methods: this is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 425 students, and the sample comprised 206 nursing students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a social media addiction questionnaire and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation test.
Findings: the study showed a significant relationship between social media addiction and the level of depression, indicated by a significant value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) between social media addiction and the level of anxiety, indicated by a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and between social media addiction and the level of stress, indicated by a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05)
Conclusion: social media addiction related to the level of depression, anxiety, and stress among students. excessive use of social media affects mental health, especially in terms of depression and anxiety.
