Abstract

Background: Hemorrhoids are circulatory disorders characterized by the dilation of veins that frequently occur in the anal region. According to WHO data, the number of people suffering from hemorrhoids worldwide in 2008 reached over 230 million and is projected to increase to 350 million by 2030. Individuals who are overweight are known to have a higher risk of developing hemorrhoids due to increased intra-abdominal pressure, as obesity leads to fat accumulation in the body. Objective: To determine the relationship between BMI and the incidence of hemorrhoids in patients at the General Hospital of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang for the period of June 2023 to May 2024. Method: This study utilized an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional approach, involving a sample of 48 respondents. Data collection was conducted using medical records and then analyzed using SPSS software with the chi-square statistical test. Results: The results of the chi-square statistical test showed a chi-square value of 12.611 with a p-value of 0.006 (p < 0.05). This indicates a significant relationship between BMI and the incidence of hemorrhoids. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is a relationship between BMI and the incidence of hemorrhoids in patients at the General Hospital of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang for the period of June 2023 to May 2024.
