Abstract

Background: Acute appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix often caused
by luminal obstruction. One of the main risk factors is constipation, which increases
intraluminal pressure and supports the growth of colonic bacterial flora. This study
aims to explore the relationship between constipation and the incidence of acute
appendicitis.
Objective: To determine the relationship between constipation and the incidence of
acute appendicitis in patients aged 20—60 years at Universitas Muhammadiyah
Malang General Hospital.
Method: This study employed a quantitative observational-analytic design with a
cross-sectional approach. Data were collected from patients at Universitas
Muhammadiyah Malang General Hospital in November 2024, involving 20
respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were gathered using
questionnaires and medical records, then analyzed bivariately using the Fisher's
test.
Result: Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between constipation
and the incidence of acute appendicitis (p=0.004).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between constipation and the
incidence of acute appendicitis.
