Abstract
Background: Hypertension in the elderly can be interpreted as a condition where blood pressure exceeds the normal limit of systolic 140 mmHg or more and diastolic 90. The use of drugs often overcomes challenges such as side effects and non-compliance with taking medication in the elderly. Non-pharmacological approaches are an alternative to be applied as additional therapy. One simple, safe, and effective non-pharmacological method is slow deep breathing or slow and deep breathing. This study aims to determine the decrease in blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension
Method: This research design used a descriptive case study involving three participants, namely Mr. S aged 66 years, Mrs. L aged 59 years, and Mrs. T aged 70 years, who live in Banjarejo Village, Malang. Each participant performed the Slow Deep Breathing technique three times a day and was carried out for 3 days. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and blood pressure checks. In addition, the instruments used were SPMSQ, MMSE, and GDS.
Results: The results of the study showed that Slow Deep Breathing therapy is effective in lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. The results of blood pressure before and after performing the Slow Deep Breathing technique were obtained, namely in Mr. S previously 178/113mmHg and after 160/90mmHg, Mrs. L blood pressure before 190/110mmHg and after 170/95 mmHg, and Mrs. T blood pressure before was 180/90mmHg and after performing Slow Deep Breathing was 150/80mmHg..
Discussion: The application of slow deep breathing therapy can be part of a holistic hypertension management strategy in the elderly, but pharmacological treatment is also important to achieve healing in patients.
