Abstract

This research investigates the challenges encountered by English teachers at SDN 4 Wates, focusing on the perspectives and experiences of educators in addressing these issues. The study aims to shed light on the problems faced by English teachers and propose solutions to enhance the English language learning environment in primary schools. The subject of this research is one English teacher of SDN 4 Wates. The researcher used qualitative methodology which gained and analyzed the data through interviews and thematic analysis. Through interviews and observation with thematic data analysis, the research uncovers themes such as curricular problems, student-related problems, also cultural and contextual problems.
The teacher reported curricular misalignment, emphasizing rote memorization over communicative competence. To address this, the teacher adapted the lessons to align with student interests and incorporate interactive teaching methods. Student-related problems included lack of motivation and engagement; the teacher countered this by employing differentiated instruction and fostering a supportive classroom environment. Cultural and contextual challenges, such as inadequate resources and varying parental involvement, prompted the teacher to actively involve parents in the learning process. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions and professional development to support English teachers in creating effective and inclusive language learning experiences for primary school students.
