Abstract
This research is motivated by the researcher's interest in the phenomenon of foster children's adjustment that occurs at the Siti Walidah Orphanage, Magetan Regency. Foster children who have just entered the orphanage experience problems in the process of adjusting to the orphanage environment. The researcher conducted interviews with four foster child informants.
This study uses the interpersonal communication theory by Joseph DeVito and the interaction adaptation theory by Judee Burgoon. In Josep Devito's theory, there are five dimensions in building interpersonal communication including openness, empathy, positive attitude, supportive attitude, and equality. Meanwhile, Judee Burgoon's theory states that there are three dimensions in the process of interaction adaptation, including requirements, expectations, and desires (RED).
This study was conducted using a qualitative approach. In this study, researchers used a case study research basis, namely centering on one object to explore information as a whole.
The results of the study stated that interpersonal communication between foster children and caregivers in adjusting to the orphanage environment was carried out through five aspects. The first aspect is openness. In this aspect, the initiative of caregivers to communicate effectively with foster children is very important in building openness in foster children. The second aspect is empathy. Foster children's desire for acceptance, understanding, and guidance from their caregivers is a guideline for the development of empathy and positive relationships in foster children. The third aspect is a positive attitude. Caregivers who teach positive things will help foster children develop their positive attitudes. The fourth aspect is a supportive attitude. Caregivers who provide emotional and practical support help children feel supported. The fifth aspect is equality. Caregivers must listen to foster children's stories, understand their backgrounds, and provide a supportive and equal environment for foster children. The dominant aspect in interpersonal communication between foster children and caregivers is the aspect of openness. The results of the study stated that the closeness of foster children to their caregivers is the main key to their adjustment in orphanages.
