Abstract
This research aims to understand the audience’s interpretation, specifically among Communication Science students majoring in Journalism at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), regarding Najwa Shihab’s speech that satirizes the Ferdy Sambo case on TikTok. The research employs a qualitative method with Stuart Hall’s reception analysis approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with three UMM Journalism Communication Science students who are active TikTok users. The results indicate that the audience has diverse ways of receiving and interpreting Najwa Shihab’s speech as constructed by the media. The dominant interpretation that emerged was the audience’s criticism of the police’s intimidation of the public. The audience appreciated Najwa Shihab’s courage in criticizing the Ferdy Sambo case and saw it as an education on the importance of justice and law enforcement. Based on the preferred reading analysis, the media portrays society as victims of police intimidation. The findings show that the three subjects who watched Najwa Shihab’s speech video on TikTok from Pojok Satu Selebriti tend to be in the dominant hegemonic position. This study contributes to the understanding of how audiences interpret media messages and how media can be used to convey social criticism.
