Abstract

Story film has many kinds of genre. In here, genre is defined as a film marked by a style, shape, or a specific content. There are such called as drama, horror, comedy, documentation, and children’s film(Marseli Sumarno, 1996:10-11). While nowadays, the theme of children’s films, the producers both from the inside and the outside of country are generally assumed that children needs a hero in their lifes. Kicks, smashes and kinds of violent acts are legally used when the ’enemies’ are starting to come and children are asked to considered their heroes acts are a wise deed. For children, a stunned film is the main charm. Whether the stunning would be showed, they are wanted to see something that is stimulating and consists of terrors, violence and stunning. Anything that serves stunning, adventures or mystery are considered as something that is different from the daily life. The statement of problem in this study is, how much the violent acts appeared in “Tom & Jerry” cartoon film second edition by Hanna-Barbera. The word of violence is used to describe acts, both in overt and covert, offensive or diffensive, followed by the power use to other people. So, there are three kinds of violence that could be identified as an overt violence, covert violence, also an agressive violence. Numbers of study showed that television raised a discourse perception from the reality of life. For example like films that describing lots of violence as something that deserve to be done in handling a problem. This kind of description would raised in the audience minds and at the end it would influenced the way of the audience in handling problem. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The base of this study was using a content analysis. The technique of collecting the data was using coding sheet, which was the data collection was taken from the coding sheet, which designed based on the settled category. The technique of the data analysis of this study was using the content analysis in ”Tom&Jerry” cartoon film by Hanna-Barbera. This technique used to identify the additional violence through the settled categories. But before the data collection analyzed, firstly, the researcher had a reliability test, which was repeating the instrument from the same material. After the data collection was collected in the data tabulation, the data was analyzed quantitatively, in percentation to know the description of the violence inside that cartoon film. Based on the result of the study, also related to the statement of problem, it concluded into several conclusion that in the ”Tom&Jerry” cartoon film, there were three additional violence, those were: (1) the overt violence shown 33 times or 43% of the whole total violence that appeared in the film. The frequency of violent indication was starting at scene 2. (2) covert violence, the violence appeared 31 times or 40% of the whole total violence that appeared in the film. The frequency of violent indication was starting at scene 7. (3) agressive violence, the violence appeared13 times or 17% of the whole total violence that appeared in the film. The frequency of violent indication was starting at scene 1. So that, from 206 of the overall analyzed scene, the violence found 77 times.
