Abstract
This paper examines Cardi B's accent in her rap songs and the reasons for the accent employment among the songs that naturally become the research's object. It explains Cardi B's accent in her rap songs and the accent used by Cardi B within her music performance has some differences from Standard American English. This study was purposed to (1) the types of accents used by Cardi B in her three rap songs and (2) the reasons for using an accent while singing her rap songs.
This research implemented a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were taken from three of Cardi B's rap songs titled I Like It, Bodak Yellow, and Money Bag. The research instrument in this study was written and non-written documents about the American accent, African-American accent, Cardi B, and her three rap songs.
This study revealed that the 27 words within those three particular songs were proved to have different ways of pronunciation with a Standard American accent, which later was confirmed as an African-American accent. This research also revealed the reason of Cardi B for implemented the African-American accent. The first reason is due to the strong influence of Southern American music, which utilized an African-American accent, and the second reason is that Cardi B feels more comfortable using an African-American accent in her rap songs performance.
