Abstract
Social ties are a crucial component in the way we live our daily lives. This requires communication to achieve a goal in interaction. Novels not only tell about everyday life containing the events in a book, but also tell stories which can be in the form of facts and the author's imagination from time to time. This research is entitled "Analysis of Language Variations in the Novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori." with the following problem formulation: 1. What are the forms of group language variations or sociolects in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori? 2. How does language variation function using M.A.K. Haliday's theory in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori?
This research method uses a qualitative descriptive method. This research uses data sources from the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori. The focus of this research is on the form of language variation in novel dialogues and monologues which are studied using sociolinguistic theory and M.A.K Halliday's theory of function with a sociolinguistic approach. Data collection was carried out by reading and recording research materials. This data was analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The data in this study is in the form of sentences that show the form of language variations in the novel.
The results of the research findings found 114 data from 7 functions of language variation according to M.A.K Halliday in the novel "Sea Bercerita" by Leila S. Chudori. These include 47 data representations, 40 interactional data, 8 personal data, 7 instrumental data, 6 regulatory data, 4 heuristic data, and 2 imaginative data. The representational function is the most common function because the character Laut makes a lot of monologues about stories of his friends' past, or tells the reality of what is happening at that time or in the past. The second most common is the interactional function. The characters in the novel cannot be separated from the characters who speak to each other. From this speech, an interactional function occurs and directs the storyline in the novel.
