STUDENT'S PROBLEMS AND CAUSES IN LEARNING SPEAKING SKILLS ENGLISH AT MTS NEGERI KOTA BATU

Speaking skills are crucial for classroom interactions and daily life, helping to make good first impressions and maintain professional relationships (Sukrutrit, 2023) Many students struggle with learning speaking skills. According to Amoah & Yeboah (2021), these difficulties arise from two main factors: linguistic issues (vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar) and psychological issues (anxiety, shyness, and fear of making mistakes). This research was conducted at MTS Negeri Kota Batu because a preliminary study during PLP II revealed that many students were afraid of presenting their work and struggled to convey their ideas directly to the teacher. Additionally, many students had speaking scores below the KKM, further justifying the selection of this school for the research. In chapter two there are problems in speaking, namely miss pronunciation, lack of fluency, and poor grammar. Next, in the causes of the problems in learning speaking, there are causes of missed pronunciation, causes of lack of fluency, and causes of poor grammar. This research used a case study for the design of the study with the subject of 24 students for document/video checklist and 3 students for interview. The data was collected by document/video checklist and interview guide, and the researcher has three steps for analyzing the data, classifying, describing, and drawing conclusions. The result found three main problems among 24 students: miss pronunciation (27 errors), lack of fluency (28 cases), and poor grammar (28 cases). Causes that causing the problems in learning speaking faced by students at MTs Negeri Kota Batu include vowel and consonant errors, similar sounds, inhibition, anxiety, interlingual transfer, and intralingual transfer
