Abstract
Baby Blues has become a taboo in society, so many cases of Baby Blues are underestimated which in the end the condition worsens into Postpartum Depression. The movie “Baby Blues is one of the movies that raises mental health issues that focus on postpartum mothers. This movie was released because of the many cases of child murder by their own biological mothers that stemmed from Baby Blues that did not get proper treatment.
With the formulation of the problem of how new mothers in Malang Raya interpret the message of Depression in the movie “Baby Blues” by Andi Bachtiar. The purpose of this research is to find out the meaning of new mothers in Malang Raya towards Depression in the movie “Baby Blues”. This research uses Stuart Hall's reception study theory which is categorized into 3 parts, namely Dominant Hegemony Position, Negotiation Position, and Opposition Position. The method used in this research is qualitative with semi-structured interview data collection techniques.
The results showed that of the 6 subjects, 3 subjects were in the Dominant position of the six reception indicators studied, while the other 2 subjects were in the Negotiation position in the reception of the meaning of depression in the film Baby Blues that Dika's character who is also a new father needs to adapt. However, there is 1 subject who is in the Opposition position in the observation and experience section regarding Dinda's situation in the Baby Blues Movie. Some subjects' opinions are influenced by their backgrounds. That Baby Blues is real and a postpartum mother must be given social support.
