Abstract

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is a type of welding process that is widely used in the world of joining metals or metal alloys, the advantages of welding can operate automatically, relatively fast implementation and has high reliability in welding applications. The strength of welded joints is influenced by many factors including heat input, current strength, welding speed, cooling rate, chemical composition of filler metal and base metal. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in current strength on tensile strength, HAZ macro area, and Non-Destructive Test MT, UT observations on GMAW welding of S355J2 steel. The steel used is S355J2, the welding seam is in the form of a single V 60˚ but joint with a 1G position, and the filler metal is ER70S-6 with GMAW welding variations in current strength of 100 A, 200 A, and 300 A. Testing for joint defects is carried out by magnetic test and ultrasonic test, testing the mechanical properties carried out is tensile test and macro test. This study shows that the effect of variations in GMAW welding current strength has the highest tensile strength value at a current of 200 A, namely 538.77 Mpa, the second is at a current of 300 A with a value of 533.5 Mpa, while the lowest tensile strength is at a current of 100 A, namely 517.87 Mpa. Macro test results of the highest HAZ width at a current of 300 A with a value of 4 mm. This result shows that the increasing welding current will reduce the tensile strength value and the best GMAW welding at 200 Ampere current with a tensile strength value of 538.77 Mpa and the greater the welding current used, the width of the HAZ weld area also increases.
