Abstract
Film is a social phenomenon that can be interpreted in multiple ways. When a film is watched, there are many messages that are then interpreted by the audience. The power and capability of film to reach various social segments allow film enthusiasts to potentially influence or shape perspectives, facilitating the audience's understanding of diverse information presented and the messages contained within. An example is the film Dua Garis Biru by Gina S. Noer, which addresses the issue of premarital pregnancy and has faced controversy and criticism from some quarters for scenes considered potentially damaging to Indonesian youth.
As one of the mass media tools, film serves as a highly effective medium of communication. Representation refers to the process of creating meaning through the formation of concepts in one's mind using everyday language. Semiotics is the theory that studies signs and their meanings. Semiotics examines signs in various contexts, including scenarios, images, texts, and scenes in films to derive interpretations.
The research aims to understand and discover how the representation of adolescent social interactions is portrayed in the film Dua Garis Biru. The study employs qualitative methods using Charles S. Peirce’s semiotic analysis approach to interpret images and the meanings of visual elements in the film’s scenes.
The findings indicate that the portrayal of adolescent social interactions in the film reveals that contemporary youth are not necessarily afraid of religious norms and moral codes but are more concerned about the influence of people around them regarding free sex, family relationships, and friendships.
