Abstract
This research aims to identify the most dominant elements of the communication mix in social interactions between the Paser and Bugis tribes in Penajam Paser Utara Regency (PPU). Intercultural communication is a process by which individuals from different cultures create shared meanings, involving not only spoken words but also the social context, cultural values, and beliefs underlying these interactions. In Sepaku Village, cultural differences between the Paser and Bugis tribes create challenges in communication that can lead to issues and barriers in social relationships between these groups.
This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method to delve into the issues affecting the intercultural communication mix in the area. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The findings indicate that the success of intercultural communication heavily depends on the individuals' ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences and the awareness of commonalities that may exist among them. Moreover, different languages and cultural norms between the Paser and Bugis tribes can be sources of misunderstanding and conflict if not properly managed.
The findings of this research are expected to provide better insights into how to improve intercultural communication in Sepaku Village, as well as to help create a more inclusive and harmonious society amidst the existing ethnic diversity. This study is also expected to be used as teaching material in intercultural studies, anthropology, and other social sciences, and to provide practical benefits for the local community in overcoming barriers to intercultural communication.
