Abstract

Performance art is an artistic expression of a culture, performed live in front of an audience, involving elements of time, space, the body, and interaction between the artist and the audience. Its purpose is to entertain, inspire, and convey various issues or emotions. Performance art also serves as a means of communicating cultural and aesthetic values, and it evolves within society as part of customs and the need for entertainment.

Randai Si Agak Tuah is a performance art form belonging to the community of Kenegarian Limbukan, Payakumbuh, which serves as a traditional means of communication containing moral messages and life teachings. This Randai teaches how to be an Urang Sumando, a person liked by the community, through the story of Si Agak Tuah, who strives to fulfil the social, moral, and ethical values of the Minangkabau society. Despite facing the challenges of modernity, Randai Si Agak Tuah remains vital for preserving cultural identity and imparting local values to the younger generation.

This research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretative type and is based on the ethnography of communication. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews with six subjects selected through purposive sampling, and documentation. All data were analysed using Miles and Huberman's data analysis concept, and data validity was tested using the triangulation of data sources technique.

In this research, in accordance with the theory of the ethnography of communication, communicative practices are explained, which consist of communication situations, communication events, and communication acts found in the Randai Si Agak Tuah performance in Kenegarian Limbukan. The messages in this performance are aimed at men who want to marry and women to understand the role of men in family life as Urang Sumando. The research aims to clearly explain how traditional communication in the community of Kenegarian Limbukan is conveyed through Randai Si Agak Tuah so that other members of the Kenegarian Limbukan community can also understand and appreciate this performance.
