Abstract
Mahayu Larasati 202010040311073. Family Communication Patterns in Maintaining Relationships between Parents and Children Overseas (Case Study of Communication Students at the Muhammadiyah University of Malang Class of 2020 from Bali). Undergraduate Thesis, Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, 2024.
There is a phenomenon, namely changes in children's attitudes when they are abroad, which explains the importance of family communication patterns in maintaining family relationships with children who have migrated. The aim of this research is to reveal family communication patterns in maintaining relationships between parents and children overseas. Case Study of the 2020 Class of Communication Students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang from Bali. This research uses the S-O-R (Stimulus – Organism – Response) theory. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with data collection using in-depth interviews and documentation. In this research, the research subjects were families of students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang from Bali, consisting of parents and children. The research results show that all subject families have different communication patterns, namely: Equality Pattern, Balanced Split Pattern and Unbalanced Split Pattern. Subjects with a protective family type have a communication pattern, namely a separate unbalanced communication pattern (Unbalanced Split Pattern). Subjects with a consensual family type have an Equality pattern of communication. Subjects with a pluralistic family type have a separate unbalanced communication pattern (Unbalanced Split Pattern). It is necessary for parents to better understand their children's attitudes and characteristics from the start so that when they are overseas they can control their children emotionally through characters that they already understand so that they can build good relationships even when they are overseas.
