Abstract
This research aims to find out how the Hallyu wave or Korean cultural wave has become a phenomenon that can be studied in modeling theory and causes toxic masculinity behavior among students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The Hallyu wave is a phenomenon of South Korean cultural products such as K-pop and Korean dramas which have been successful in being popular in various parts of the world, including Indonesia. The Hallyu wave brought soft masculinity as a new masculinity in popularity, soft masculinity is masculinity that combines feminine and masculine traits. Of course, soft masculinity is different from traditional masculinity as local masculinity sees that men are actually strong, tough, and avoid all feminine attitudes like women. Researchers used qualitative research methods in-depth interviews. The data used by researchers was collected from interviews with research subjects of Hallyu Wave fan students at UMM, questionnaires, and literature studies. The research results show that the hallyu wave has an influence on toxic masculinity among students who are fans of the hallyu wave at UMM. The influence of the hallyu wave began with cultural domination due to the media on many sectors of fans' lives, this domination gave rise to imitation from fans and spread to reactions and resistance from the surrounding environment, due to the presence of foreign culture in their country. Toxic masculinity is a form of reaction and resistance from the surrounding environment to Hallyu Wave culture which is considered foreign and incompatible with local culture.
