Abstract

Octavia, Yeshinta seli. 2024. NIM. 202010040311215. Persuasive Communication Process between Parents and Children in Decision Making Regarding Early Marriage. Thesis, Communication Science Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Supervisor: Winda Hardyanti., S.Sos., M.Sc
This research was motivated by researchers' interest in the phenomenon of early marriage that occurs in the Tuban district. Tuban Regency has a high rate of early marriage, namely in the top 10 in East Java province as a district where many early marriages occur. Researchers conducted interviews with four mother informants, four father informants and four child informants.
This research uses the attitude change theory by Carl Hovland which says that the persuasive communication process includes how the message from the communicator is sent to the communicant, how the communicant will study the message that has been received to understand it so that it can be accepted, and what the results of the communication that has been carried out are. changes in behavior, actions and attitudes as a form of reciprocity from the communication process that has been established.
This research was conducted using a qualitative approach. In this research, researchers used the case study method, namely research that can explore detailed information.
The research results stated that the persuasive communication process between parents and children in decision-making was based on parents' excessive fear of promiscuity. In sending messages, the method used is to instill the view that early marriage is something good. Next, the communicant learns the message so that the child's attitude changes, which initially felt doubtful. Finally, with the involvement of other families, doubts turned into willingness. The persuasive communication process using affirmative messages is the method chosen by message communicators with the aim of that children can accept the principles of early marriage.
