Abstract
In the contemporary era, the acquisition of knowledge no longer relies solely on a traditional approach focusing solely on content; instead, it necessitates the development of cognitive skills for effective problem-solving. This study seeks to ascertain: (1) the impact of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on the critical thinking abilities of fifth-grade students in geometry at SDN Gadingkulon 01 Malang, and (2) the influence of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on the academic achievements of fifth-grade students in mathematics, specifically geometry, at SDN Gadingkulon 01 Malang.
This study employs a quantitative quasi-experimental design approach. The research was conducted at SDN Gadingkulon 01 Malang during the even semester of 2023/2024, specifically in January 2024. The population for this research comprised fifth-grade students during the academic year 2023/2024, totaling 23 students. A saturated sampling technique was utilized, resulting in a sample size identical to the population, consisting of 23 students. Data collection methods encompassed observation, questionnaires, and learning outcomes tests. The data analysis involved validity, reliability, normality, and t-test assessments.
The research findings indicate the following: (1) There is a significant positive effect resulting from the combination of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on students' critical thinking abilities. (2) Regarding learning outcomes, it can be inferred that implementing Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in mathematics education, particularly in the geometry curriculum for fifth-grade students at SDN Gadingkulon 01 Malang, has a beneficial impact.
The results of this research show that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach has an effect on students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes in learning mathematics subjects, especially in geometry material in class V at SDN Gadingkulon 01 Malang and It is recommended to be applied in the learning process, both from the perspective of teachers and students.
