Abstract

The fact that Literacy skills in science learning activities are still quite low because students still find it difficult to understand learning materials and media that are less supportive, so there needs to be efforts to improve through the development of learning media. This study aims to determine (1) the development of big book media to improve student's literacy skills in grade IV elementary science material and (2) the effectiveness of big book media in improving students' literacy skills in grade IV science material at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang.
This study used the ADDIE research model with qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques. As the source of the data, 26 students were selected for grade IV students of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang for the 2023/2024 school year. This research was conducted in January-February 2024 with data collection techniques regarding the implementation of the use of big book media and effectiveness in the use of these media by observation, interviews, questionnaires, evaluation tests, and documentation.
The results showed (1) the development of big book media to improve students' literacy skills in Class IV elementary school science material made students more active, more enthusiastic, and more fun in classroom learning activities. This is shown by the results of the percentage of material validity of 94%, and the results of media validity of 84% stating that the media has occupied the very good category. (2) The effectiveness of Big Book media can improve students' literacy skills. This is aimed at the evaluation results getting a percentage of 78.4% that have reached values above KKM. From the questionnaire responses, students get a percentage of 95% with a very good category.
The results of this study, show big book learning media are recommended to be used in supporting learning success and developed with other more interesting, more innovative materials that are useful for teachers and students to create fun learning activities.
