Abstract
The Independent Curriculum instructs the implementation of differentiated learning according to the characteristics of students, in terms of students' learning styles. The VARK learning style is very important to consider in improving student academic achievement because the VARK learning style can create an interesting learning environment and stimulate the senses in learning. At SDN Krenceng 1 Kediri in class IV mathematics learning has not yet applied the VARK learning style. The purpose of this study was to determine the VARK learning style of students in class IV SDN Krenceng 1 Kediri.
This research method uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The research subjects were grade 1 educators at SDN Besuki 01 Blitar. This research required 4 research instruments, namely observation, interviews, questionnaires and documentation. The data analysis technique is done by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. While the data validity test was carried out by Technical Triangulation.
The results showed that there were various patterns of student learning styles, with 4 students with a visual dominant learning style [V], 1 student with an auditory dominant learning style [A], 3 students with a read/write dominant learning style [R], and 3 kinesthetic dominant learning style students [K]. Class IV of SDN Krenceng 1 Kediri is dominated by students who like learning activities that involve visual elements, such as seeing a picture or an action. Even so, teachers need to facilitate all student learning styles, by designing learning activities that suit the characteristics of visual, auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic learning styles. Activities that facilitate all learning styles can be applied to learning Mathematics.
It is hoped that suggestions for research will increase experience and information about mathematics learning outcomes based on the VARK learning style as preparation for becoming a teacher.
