Abstract
Background: Aging leads to a decline in physical function in the elderly, including muscle strength and body balance, which can increase the risk of falls. Physical activity is known to play an important role in maintaining muscle strength, coordination, and postural stability. Several previous studies have shown a significant relationship between physical activity and balance in the elderly; however, some findings remain inconsistent depending on respondent characteristics and measurement methods. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between physical activity and functional balance in the elderly.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity levels and functional balance in the elderly at Posyandu ILP Nusa Indah.
Methods: This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 249 elderly individuals, with a sample of 76 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Physical activity levels were measured using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), and balance was measured using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test.
Results: The univariate analysis showed that most respondents had good physical activity (54 respondents; 71.1%) and good balance (37 respondents; 48.7%). The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between physical activity levels and functional balance in the elderly (χ² = 6.692; p = 0.010).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between physical activity levels and functional balance in the elderly. The better the physical activity performed by the elderly, the better their balance ability.
