Abstract

Communication Patterns of Parents and Esports Coaches in Building Students’ Character (A Study at SMK YP 17-1 Malang). Undergraduate Thesis, Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, 2026.

The development of the esports phenomenon among students is no longer merely a form of entertainment; it has also become a potential medium for character building when supported by an appropriate communication ecosystem. This study aims to examine in depth the roles, communication patterns, and synergy between parents and esports coaches in shaping the character of students who participate in the esports extracurricular program at SMK YP 17-1 Malang. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with five parents of outstanding students and one esports coach. The collected data were then analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman.

The findings reveal that the interactions established go beyond one-way message delivery. Instead, communication forms a primary communication pattern conducted through direct face-to-face interaction. Furthermore, the three parties create a dynamic “Triadic-Circular” model in which coaches, parents, and students remain interconnected and continuously provide feedback to one another. The ongoing negotiation of discourse within this communication pattern is directed toward achieving a balance between esports performance, academic responsibilities, and social life. A strong role synergy was identified: coaches act as technical mentors who cultivate a competitive mindset, while parents serve as facilitators who support students’ physical and mental well-being. This collaborative communication synergy has been shown to contribute positively to the development of essential character values in students, including discipline, teamwork, time management, and integrity through their ability to learn from failure.
