Abstract
Background: Overweight and obesity constitute a significant global health problem with increasing prevalence, particularly in Indonesia. Excess body weight negatively impacts respiratory mechanics through fat accumulation in the thoracic and abdominal areas, which may lead to decreased lung function across all age groups.
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between overweight/obesity and decreased lung function based on age groups (adolescents, adults, and elderly) in Dau District, Malang.
Method: This study used an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 100 respondents were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of three age groups: adolescents (n=33), adults (n=33), and elderly (n=34). Weight status was measured using BMI, skinfold calipers, and waist circumference. Lung function was assessed using spirometry (FVC). Data were analyzed using the Spearman's rh correlation test..
Result: The study found a significant relationship between overweight and decreased lung function (FVC) in all three age groups. In adolescents, r=0.436 (p=0.011); in adults, r=0.565 (p=0.001); and in the elderly, r=0.339 (p=0.050). The adult group demonstrated the strongest correlation.
Conclusion: The study results showed a significant association between excess weight/obesity and decreased lung function in all age groups studied. The degree of correlation varied, with adults showing the strongest association. Early obesity prevention is crucial for maintaining respiratory health throughout the lifespan..
