Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a major health problem in the elderly, contributing to
increased morbidity and mortality rates. One lifestyle factor suspected of being
associated with hypertension is coffee consumption, which contains caffeine, a
stimulant.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between coffee consumption
and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly at the Ciptomulyo Community Health
Center, Sukun District, Malang City.
Methods:This study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional
approach. The sample consisted of 125 elderly people selected using a purposive
sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation
sheets, as well as blood pressure measurements using a sphygmomanometer. Data
analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test to determine the relationship
between variables.
Results and Conclusion: The results of the study showed no significant relationship
between coffee consumption and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly at the
Ciptomulyo Community Health Center, Sukun District, Malang City (p-value = 1.000).
This indicates that coffee does not significantly affect the occurrence of hypertension
in respondents. This condition may be influenced by several other factors such as diet,
physical activity, stress, or genetic factors that are more dominant in influencing blood
pressure than coffee consumption.
