Abstract
Cosmetics are products used to beautify the appearance of the face. Various kinds of cosmetic products are increasingly appearing nowadays. One type of cosmetic is whitening cream. This whitening cream contains active substances which function to brighten black spots on the skin. The active ingredient often used in cosmetics is hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a class of hard drugs whose use must be based on a doctor's prescription. The use of hydroquinone is prohibited in over-the-counter cosmetic preparations, but may be used under a doctor's supervision at 2%.
The aim of this study was to measure the levels of hydroquinone in creams prepared by doctors circulating in Malang City. This is done using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. One way to evaluate the safety of its use is to find out how much hydroquinone the cream contains.
The research method used was chosen descriptively. This research was carried out at the Integrated Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang over a period of 3 months.
The results of this research analysis show that after carrying out quantitative and qualitative tests, of the fifteen samples studied, 9 samples contained hydroquinone. 7 of the 9 samples contained amounts of hydroquinone that exceeded the safe limit permitted by BPOM RI, namely no more than 2% and 6 samples were safe or did not contain hydroquinone.
