Abstract

This study aims to describe the dominance of errors in the use of cohesion and coherence in Indonesian written discourse produced by BIPA students at C1 level 5 in the 2024 academic year, Southeast Asian Studies Department, Open University Ho Chi Minh City. The background of this study is based on the importance of cohesion and coherence as essential elements in creating unity and comprehensibility in written discourse. This study is grounded in theories of cohesion and coherence proposed by Tarigan (1993) as well as other discourse scholars. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through documentation of students’ written texts. The data were analyzed through the stages of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing.
The findings reveal that the most dominant errors occur in grammatical cohesion, particularly in the use of pronominal reference (12 data), followed by lexical cohesion in the form of repetition (8 data), and coherence errors (12 data), which include illogical cause–effect, means–result, and comparative relationships. These errors tend to be repetitive and are influenced by limited mastery of Indonesian language rules, first language interference, and weak organization of ideas. This study concludes that students’ ability to construct cohesive and coherent discourse in terms of both form and meaning still needs to be improved through more structured and discourse-oriented writing instruction.
