Abstract
Background: Burnout is a global issue frequently experienced by healthcare professionals, particularly nurses working in critical care units such as the Emergency Room (ER) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This condition has serious impacts on the physical and psychological well-being of nurses as well as the quality of hospital services. An important factor that plays a role in reducing the risk of burnout is self-efficacy, which is an individual's belief in their ability to overcome work-related challenges.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and the level of burnout among nurses in the ER and ICU at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang Hospital (UMM Hospital) and Wava Husada Hospital.
Methods: This study utilized a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 90 nurses recruited using a total sampling technique, comprising 34 nurses at UMM Hospital and 56 nurses at Wava Husada Hospital. The instruments used were the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test via SPSS software, as the data were measured on an ordinal scale.
Results: The majority of respondents were in the high self-efficacy category (78.9%) and moderate burnout level (53.3%). The Spearman Rank test results showed a p-value = 0.000 (< 0.05) with a correlation coefficient (r) = -0.529, indicating a significant negative relationship between self-efficacy and burnout.
Conclusion: There is a significant negative relationship between self-efficacy and burnout among ER and ICU nurses at UMM Hospital and Wava Husada Hospital. The higher the level of self-efficacy possessed by the nurses, the lower the level of burnout experienced. Strengthening self-efficacy through training and organizational support is recommended to improve the psychological resilience of nurses in critical care units.
